If I have said it once I have said it a hundred times: great is great and it lasts forever when it comes to furniture and lighting. That’s why I encourage my clients to purchase furniture that will always be timeless and that they will want to always keep in their lives. It has been my mantra to furnish my own homes that way and it has proved to be failsafe for me.
Enter the outrageously-fabulous, multi-talented designer Tony Duquette (see post) who created his designs for the rich and famous around the world starting in the late 1930’s until his death in 1999. His creativity speaks for itself and, whether or not his style is your style, you have got to admit he was truly a fantastic designer of innumerable furnishings, art, jewelry, and lighting.
Now enter Remains Lighting, a company with its roots in the past, and an owner that truly loves antique lighting. They have teamed up with the powers that be…most likely Hutton Wilkinson, Duquette’s old business partner, and the person responsible for restoring the Duquette estate in Los Angeles, among other current Duquette enterprises…and reissued a superb collection of Duquette’s lighting fixtures, one more beautiful than the next.
I had heard about this through the design grapevine, and one day last week I was passing the store located on West 28th Street in Manhattan and instantly fell in love with a lamp in the window, totally unbeknownst to me that it was a Duquette design.
Inside the store, the lovely Katelyn showed me all of the other sconces and ceiling lights on display from their Duquette collection and I was in designer nirvana for about an hour! Each and every one of them is beyond gorgeous…with creativity oozing out of every piece of metal, crystal bead and light bulb.
There is nothing more satisfying than to discover the work of a designer that you meet eye to eye on dezign-wise. If I had my druthers I put a light fixture by Duquette in each of my client’s homes.
His lighting designs show whimsy, irreverence, traditional origins, organic input, sophistication and imagination non-plus. AND I love it all! Owning one of his fixtures is like purchasing a notable work of art…it will always be outstanding, collectible and beautiful.
Okay, now you know a great designer source to head to if you want to purchase a little bit of design history and design glamour for your home. FYI, Remains Lighting is also a terrific source for other 20th Century lighting fixtures and lamps that are outstanding and which I know you will enjoy looking at and possibly considering for your home. Have fun!
Ciao, ciao ’til next time!
