I attended  a wonderful event  last Tuesday evening  given by the NY Chapter of the International Furnishings and Design Association ( IFDA) to announce the 2012 honorees of its prestigious Circle of Excellence Awards.  It is always a great buzz when

people in the design industry gather together.  I think we  have so much to talk about and share that the noise level in the room is a zillion decibels!

The event is held every other year,  and this year was the 65th Anniversary of the organization.  This year’s emcees were none other than Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan, who definitely have their finger on the pulse of the industry…plus a super terrific sense of humor!

This year’s honoree’s included:

Susan Weber, founder and director of the Bard Graduate Center, Cary Kravet , President of Kravet Inc., Charlotte Moss of Charlotte Moss, LLC,  the Hearst Design Group’s ELLE DECOR, Michael Boodro & Barbara Friemann/ HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, Newell Turner & Kate Kelly Smith/ and VERANDA, Dara Caponigro & Jennifer Levene Bruno.

There was another honoree, Claire Coleman, the original founder of the IFDA  back when women in any industry had a tough time being recognized. In 1947, Coleman was a reporter for Retail Home Furnishings, and over a lunch with six friends…all women…discussed her exclusion from the all-male “Drapery & Curtain Club Market Dinner.”  Motivated, and totally unfazed by the consequences of her actions, she started the National Home Furnishings League. This organization became the format through which home fashion trends were communicated throughout the design industry for decades and eventually reinvented itself into the International Furnishings & Design Association as it’s chapters spread across the country.   You go girl!

Winning an award is a special honor that only a select few  receive in their working lifetime.  Winning an award from  your peers in your industry takes that honor to an even higher level.
