Daniel and I (AKA Shields & Company) just designed the most beautiful acrylic table with a fabulous custom furnishings company called Interiors By Royale. They are well known in the industry as a custom workroom for window treatments and drapery hardware as well as upholstery, to the Trade only,I’m afraid. However, I adore them for their simply beautiful line of tables, chairs, consoles and ‘you name its’ out of acrylic  Plus, they have the ability to realize any and all of your custom acrylic furniture design-dreams to a tee.

Many years ago, when I was in business with my mother, we created all sorts of tables out of acrylic for our clients.  I am talking about the  70′ & the 80’s, when iconic designers like Karl Springer used acrylic to make sophisticated small tables with cantilevered glass and big chunky cocktail tables that were simply to die for! We must have purchased 1000 bar stools made from acrylic for kitchens and custom bars we designed over the years. I mean it was a hot look then and it’s use in interior design is just as hot today.

Interiors by Royale is owned and run by a delightful gentleman named Carl Romanowski.  As you probably know, acrylic plastic is a synthetic and is known more commonly by such names as Plexiglas, Lucite, Perspex, and Crystallite, Lucite being the name I am more familiar with.  Carl knows just about everything there is to know about making furniture out of acrylic and actually makes a lot of acrylic furnishings for other companies…although he didn’t divulge their names!

The Interiors By Royale showroom in the uptown design district of Manhattan is located in a sliver of a duplex shop with wonderful treasures all over. It is almost like an acrylic furniture candy shop as each and every piece looks like something you want to include in a new design project.

Carl insists he uses only top grade acrylic materials which come from Germany…no cheap Chinese material substitutes for him.  He insists on only the best of the best for his products and it definitely shows.

There is something very seductive about acrylic furniture to me.  I love its contrast and freshness and sense of unexpectedness.  AND Interiors by Royale does all sorts of cool creative things with the acrylic…textures it in very exotic ways, colors it in many colors of the rainbow.

Here, once again, is the pièce de résistance, the table we created with Interiors by Royale. It was made with a 2 1/2″ thick acrylic top and a textured design in the center, designed around a set of antique Indian Raj silver legs a client of ours owned.  I think it is marvelous looking…totally lush and original and chic!  AND our client loves it too!

Love designing…love creating…love Carl and Interiors By Royale!

Ciao, ciao ’til next time!
