SEA CREATURES FROM FLORIDA: THE WORK OF ED KOEHLER

One of my favorite discoveries as an interior designer was coming across the work of  metal artisan, ED KOEHLER.  I can’t remember just how I found out about his work, but I use

his pieces frequently in my projects, always with great success and client happiness. He is one of my hidden dezign secrets, and I want to share his work with you today.

BROWN CHANDELIER

KOEHLER hails from the Florida Keys and makes a wonderful line of  handcrafted original metal lighting fixtures and tables that are based on his long association with the sea. I call them sea creatures, but they are really far more fascinating than that.

GOLD BLACK SEA KELP CEILING LIGHT

KOEHLER’S  long attraction and association with sea has been the inspiration behind  his designs. Spending his youth with a “mask and snorkel on his face” and his early adulthood working and traveling around the world on boats, he began sculpting “sea creatures” as an avocation. His talent was quickly recognized by others and the rest is history. Today his work can be seen in residential and commercial installations throughout the US, Asia, Europe and South America.

WALL MOUNTED RIBBON LIGHT

I am particularly fascinated by his lighting fixtures,  I love their free form essence and the wonderful metal finishes…which are numerous…applied to them. They are just the perfect touch to give a room a bit of positive originality. Their organic quality is a plus-plus for my dezign eye…something different, and a tad quirky, but beautiful at the same time. In other words, not your usual lighting fixture.  That does sound like my taste, right?

DETAIL OF SEA GRAPE BASE

KOEHLER designs glorious table bases in the same genre.  Put a stunning piece of bronze glass or an outrageous piece of quartzite on the top and you will be delighted with the result.

One on my “A-List” is the Sea Grape design.  It works equally as a coffee table, dining table, kitchen table, console table, center table, etc….you get the idea!  It’s sculptural grace is nonpariel for me, and will catch the eye of one and all.

LARGE CONVEX MIRROR

Do not miss KOEHLER’S mirrors either. They can be created in customized sizes and are just as whimsical and fabulous as his lighting. They are usually round  in shape and the frames are similar interpretations of his marvelous sea creatures. One of my favs is this convex Sea Kelp mirror, but they are all equally beautiful.

Here’s the added value of working with KOEHLER on a project:  He’s delightful to deal with and totally responsive to your calls and needs. He can also send samples of the metals he uses if needed. AND for the quality of the pieces he designs and produces his pricing is excellent.  Hence, lots of “bang for the buck” in my book!

Let me know if you reach out to him for a project of your own.  Love to have your feedback.
