I have been following KGB Limited since I discovered them at an ICFF show here in Manhattan 2 years ago. I was immediately smitten with the originality and beauty of the furniture being designed by this union of three talented individuals, David Khouri, Roberto Guzman and Christiaan Bunce.
A Little Background: Khouri and Guzman hold degrees in architecture and had been partners in a furniture and design firm called Comma started in 1998. Bunce was the principal designer of Christiann Bunce Design, which incorporated both his furniture design and interior design business. Nice mix of talent…
As a designer nothing is more exciting than finding a firm that designs furniture you love. Sharing your aesthetic with other creative people is simply the best it gets. Please understand that all good designers have a great appreciation for the talent and greatness of others…it’s all about being extremely passionate for all things decorative and well executed in any form of art or design.
My first KGB crush was on their sofas and chairs. They are truly divine! They incorporate a scale reminiscent of mid-century modern furnishings and then reinterpreted with a 21st Century twist. They also have a bold no nonsense attitude about them…particularly when done up in bright fabrics or leather. No wall flowers in this collection.
Another outstanding feature I adore about KGB’s furnishings is their integration of unique materials into their designs. Their use of a Borosilicate glass top on their Duran Coffee Table and Dempsey Cocktail Table is a fabulous touch. Borosilicate glass is usually associated with cookware and it’s use in this manner is exciting and refreshing, adding a touch of that wonderful element “unexpected” which I love.
They also do marvelous things with white statuary marble and black nero marquina marble. The Overlin Sofa Table looks like the white marble is hanging loosely between its iron supports. The Demarco Dining table is an exquisite marriage of the black and white marble in a simple round shape that sings with elegance.
Plus, KGB always has on hand a bevy of select antiques that can be grabbed up immediately and enjoyed. Actually, KGB was gracious enough to allow us to borrow some of their beautiful finds, and some of their regular pieces in their line, for a high end staging event/ photo shoot we were doing at a client’s apartment. I wanted the client to buy everything…the furniture just looked so perfect in the rooms along with everything else!
AND, last but not least, they have a line of wall tiles that are architectural and textural that will definitely add a new dimension to many a project.
Okay, folks, this is an “A List” recommendation. Do not fail to follow up on going down to their showroom in the Chelsea Gallery District to check out each and everyone of the fabulous designs from this talented consortium.
Ciao, ciao ’til next time!
