VISITING THE ZIMMER + ROHDE SHOWROOM: HODSOLL & MCKENZIE NEW FABRIC LINE & MORE!

Have I already mentioned to you that I am totally crazy about fabrics?  If I have, please forgive the repetition, but as you well know, when someone is crazy-silly for something they can’t stop thinking and talking about it.  One of the finest resources I have used over the last 25 years of my career as a professional interior designer is the company Zimmer & Rohde.

Without a doubt they have some of the most dezignlicious fabrics and I am constantly incorporating them in my projects.

Zimmer + Rohde is a family run business founded in 1899 in Europe and noted around the world as one of the leaders in textile manufacturing. Conveniently located in the         D & D Building in the uptown interior design market of New York City, it is absolutely impossible to walk out of their showroom without bags of fabric samples.  The great thing is that they truly have a  broad variety of fabrics, since they represent other European fabrics houses, as well as have their own signature collections.

Today’s reason for going to the showroom is not only to browse the new furniture and upholstery collections they are currently featuring on the showroom floor with my showroom salesperson, Mary Kooi, but also to meet personally with the Design Director from the elegant English company Hodsoll & McKenzie,  Robin Klingensmith.

Face to face encounters with fabric representatives is always an “ooh & ahhh moment.” Somehow, even though you have seen so many fabulous fabrics there are always just a few more that make you say, “Oh, I must have a sample of that!” Although Hodsoll & McKenzie is a company that generally has a more muted palate and traditional feel to their fabrics, I am always open to see “what the what is,” gambling that  there will be  a few lovelies to add to my office collection of samples.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find several marvelous fabrics that would work with my current projects. I was ecstatic to discover that Hodsoll & McKenzie also does a lot of “double wide” fabrics…not, as in trailers, but as in double width in fabrics…that are positively terrific for window treatments and when you don’t want seams to show in large upholstered pieces.

A good looking fabric is like a good looking dress…sometimes it is understated and sometimes it is all about razzamatazz…but both represent good taste if the design is correct.  What I liked about this new collection from Hodsoll & McKensie is that it had a quiet elegance and and forward feeling, more of the twentieth century. I’ve already earmarked my favorites and they are now draped all over my work table at the office!

For the record, Zimmer + Rohde’s own fabric line tends to be edgy and colorful and incorporates some highly creative techniques in fabric production.  In my opinion, they most definitely have gotten the “zsazs element” down pat, and you will find their European touch exceptional.

Since Zimmer & Rohde moved to larger quarters within the building, they have expanded their product lines and now also sell furniture from Quintus and the Caperton Collection, as well as their own stupendous line of furnishings, which is designed by Damien Langlois-Meurinne.  Now you can chose from one of the six different fabric companies represented in the showroom and turn around and put it on some phenomenal piece of furniture and voilà, a veritable design miracle all done in one stop.
